rabernsimmons@ufl.eduResearch Summary
I am interested in research addressing the molecular systematics of the Kingdom Fungi, specifically that of various insect-associated and entomopathogenic (Ascomycota) or chytrid (Chytridiomycota) fungal lineages. I isolate pure cultures of fungi, which I use to construct molecular phylogenies of species, examine ultrastructural features by transmission electron microscopy, and observe developmental morphology of thalli by light microscopy. With these data, I have revised taxonomic groups to reflect a more natural phylogenetic history than classical taxonomic systems, which relied on morphology of thalli on natural substrates as detected by light microscopy. I describe new taxa with modern phylogenetic tools to promote universal taxon concepts.Current projects
